Osrednja tema raziskovanja je bila tradicionalna japonska tehnika shibori, ki je način barvanja oz. vzorčenja tekstila, pri katerem se vzorce in teksture ustvarja s pomočjo prevezovanja ali zlaganja materiala. Dele površin se s tem zavaruje pred barvo, pod vplivom visoke temperature pa se lahko pri umetnih materialih doseže tudi raznolike in obstojne prostorske učinke, teksture, prožnost, voluminoznost.
The central theme of the research was the traditional Japanese shibori technique, a dyeing method in which patterns and textures are created by tying or folding the material. This process protects certain areas of the surface from colour penetration. With artificial materials, various and lasting spatial effects, textures, flexibility and voluminosity can also be achieved under the influence of high temperature.
Študenti so tehniko interpretirali v sodobnem tekstilnem shranjevalniku. Ta je predstavljal izhodiščni pojem, raziskovan preko ideje votlega prostorskega objekta, ki je lahko postal zavetje, zatočišče, omara, prostor za svetlobo, odev za telo, skrivališče, obešalnik, potovalka, cula … Uporabne možnosti tekstilnih form so se študentom razkrivale tudi sproti, nenačrtovano, ko so jih preko samih elementov, značilnih za tehniko, presenečale funkcionalne kvalitete uporabljenih načinov. Slednje so potem vključevali in nadgrajevali v smiselno likovno celoto.
Students interpreted the technique in contemporary textile container. It represented the initial concept, explored through the idea of a hollow spatial object that could serve as shelter, refuge, wardrobe, space for light, garment for the body, hiding place, hanger, travel bag or bindle. The practical possibilities of textile forms were revealed to the students gradually and unplanned. Students were surprised by the functional qualities of the methods used. They then incorporated and enhanced these into a meaningful visual whole.
V večplastno raziskovanje pojma »shranjevalnika« so študenti vnašali tudi svoje osebne zgodbe, večkrat zaznamovane z obdobjem lockdowna, v katerem je nastajal projekt. Meditativne in osvobajajoče kvalitete tekstilnih ročnih del so se tudi tokrat izkazale za uspešne in učinkovite. Študentom so pomagale, da so se lažje prilagajali spremenjenim življenjskim okoliščinam, jih umirjale in motivirale k inovativnim raziskovanjem.
In their multifaceted exploration of the concept of a “container”, students also infused their personal stories, often marked by the period of lockdown during which the project was created. The meditative and liberating qualities of textile handcrafts once again proved successful and effective. They helped students to adapt quickly to changed life circumstances, calmed them down, and motivated them to do innovative research.
Eden izmed izzivov je bila razpoložljivost materialov, ki so jih študenti poiskali doma. Pretežno je šlo za rabljene ali odpadne tekstilne kose, za barvanje pa so se poleg kupljenih posluževali tudi naravnih barvil, ki so jih pridobivali iz rastlin. Eksperimentiranje z novim in neznanim je v študentih sprožilo še neodkrite, nezavedne potenciale in psihične kvalitete, ki so se preko besednih poigravanj realizirali v raznolikih, vsebinsko in likovno zanimivih izdelkih.
One of the challenges was the availability of materials that students had at home. Primarily, these were used or waste textile pieces, and for dyeing, they used purchased and natural dyes obtained from plants. Experimenting with the new and unknown triggered undiscovered, unconscious potentials and mental qualities in students, which were realised through wordplay in diverse, content-rich and artistically compelling objects.
